Did you know that 95% of a cat’s flea population can live in your home?
That’s because flea larvae and flea eggs can lie in carpets and furniture, waiting to re-infest. The life cycle of a flea is 3 to 8 weeks from egg to larvae, then pupae and, finally, adult flea. Fleas may delay emergence from cocoons for weeks or even months under certain conditions. Even in the face of effective and timely flea control, there are rare situations where fleas can continue to emerge from cocoons for up to 6 months.
The most common type of flea infesting cats and dogs is the "Cat flea" (Ctenocephalides felis). This flea species will infest most warm blooded animals in the household including dogs, cats, ferrets, domestic rabits, etc. Therefore, all of these animals must be treated at the same time to control fleas and prevent an infestation.
Once a flea jumps on an animal, it can lay eggs within 24 hours. The eggs are laid in the hair coat of the animal and then roll out of the hair into the animal's environment. Within a few days, a female flea can be producing 40 - 50 eggs per day. Because of this remarkable reproductive potential, it is necessary to apply flea products in a timely manner, usually once every month. Missing monthly applications allows fleas to produce hundreds of eggs that will hatch in the environment and sustain an infestation.
There are outdoor flea resivoirs. Often, failure occurs as the result of flea infestations in the surrounding outdoor environment. Products may be killing numerous fleas, but pets continue to pick up new fleas outdoors. If the environmental conditions are right, developing life stages such as eggs, larvae, and pupae will be a continuing source of newly emerging fleas. Note: squirrels and wild rabbits are seldom a source of "Cat fleas."
Fleas stay on the pet and rarely transfer from host-to-host. Pets generally do not acquire fleas directly from other flea infested animals. Pets acquire fleas from infested premises. Flea eggs deposited into premises usually develop (egg-larva-pupa-adult) within 3 to 8 weeks. It is the newly emerged flea that is found in the home or outdoors that infests pets. Essentially all the fleas seen on carpet or tile floors did not come directly from the pet, they may have come from eggs that fell off the pet over 3 to 8 weeks ago.
Flea products do not kill fleas instantaneously, and actually few products kill fleas within minutes. Most products will take several hours to a couple of days to kill all of the fleas that are on a pet at the time of product administration, or fleas acquired after product application.
